House of Nanking Cookbook: Kathy Fang, owner of Fang Restaurant, and Peter Fang, her father and owner of House of Nanking Restaurant have teamed up to offer the best Chinese recipes that House of Nanking has to offer. The photo-filled hardback is an ode to family as much as it is a top notch culinary how-to manual. Learn to concoct meals featuring chicken and snow peas with garlic sauce and master Shanghai hot sauce noodles. In the back are five different Chinese feast menus you can (hopefully) create at home. These 303 pages are a fun romp through the lives of this sweet father-and-daughter duo. Here’s a $40 coffee table art piece, a cookbook and memoir rolled into one. Published by Abrams at www.abramsbooks.com.

Our American Dream Cookbook: This $30 retail hardcover by Jennifer Glanville Love offers comfort food with a capital C in this 238-page treatise supported by the Samuel Adams Brewing Company. With over 100 recipes hailing the glories of brat sandwiches with peppers and onions to steak tacos with blackberry pear slaw, the tome is picturesque and rife with tales of entrepreneur brewers, food developers, and the chefs behind the entrees. Do note that many recipes do focus on pairing ale or cooking with beer. But I have already bookmarked the smoked salmon pinwheels recipe (no alcohol involved) which will probably be a favorite among my family and friends. Published by Salty Days, it can be purchased on www.amazon.com.

Dozy Oats: I never really liked oatmeal until I tried Dozy Oats, single-serving oatmeal packets that are both delicious and nutritious. When you pour in a packet into the Dozy Oats jar, add milk, and let it sit overnight, you have your powerful secret punch of energy for the next day. Another reason to support this company is that it is a small business founded by two cousins who love oatmeal. The 18 flavors are tantalizing and creative. The menu includes white chocolate latte, cinnamon and brown sugar, maple blueberry, chocolate peanut butter, and more. Honestly, I have loved each of the different confections that arrived in my sample box. One of the best ways to start the year is with oatmeal which yields you 25 percent (or more) of your daily fiber needs. A ten-pack sampler runs $36.99, and first-time customers get a free microwave-able jar to steep your oats. With 18 flavors to choose from, you can also build your own box. Plus, it’s gluten free.
