Bigfork, Montana – An Unforgettable Family Experience
By Donna Corwin
Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork, Montana offers an idyllic setting for multigenerational summer vacations. Nestled on the shores of Flathead Lake—the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi—this historic lodge blends rustic charm with modern amenities, creating a perfect backdrop for families seeking family fun, adventure and relaxation. The Lodge was founded in 1945 by the Averill family, who now, three generations later, continue the warm and welcoming western experience. My family has been vacationing here for over twenty-five years as an annual tradition.
The Lodge Experience

Flathead Lake Lodge is renowned for its hospitality and authentic log-cabin atmosphere. Rooms, decorated in a Ralph Lauren western style, are ideal for all ages. You can book individual rooms or a spacious cabin that can accommodate large families. Towering pine trees and sweeping lake views are a treat from every room. The lodge’s communal spaces invite families to gather in front of the roaring stone fireplace, share meals, and unwind together. Families often play board games, read, or tell stories about their day while relaxing on the worn leather couches while petting the ranch dogs.
Activities for Every Generation
No one is left out when it comes to a week at Flathead Lake Lodge. We have built priceless memories over the years participating in the wide variety of recreational activities.
- Lake Adventures: The crystal-clear waters of Flathead Lake are ideal for swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sailing, wakeboarding, waterskiing and fishing. The lodge offers complimentary boat rides and lessons, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the lake together. It is the largest freshwater lake in the West, located near Glacier National Park. While there, make sure to sail on the Questa sailboat for an exhilarating day.
- Ranch Life: Horseback riding is a signature experience at Flathead Lake Lodge. The lodge’s stables cater to all skill levels, offering trail rides through meadows and forests. Little ones can embark on pony rides, while older children learn horsemanship skills. Adults may join on more advanced excursions. There is also a kid’s rodeo with the gentle horses slowwwwly racing in the arena.
- Outdoor Recreation: Hiking and biking trails wind through the surrounding mountains, providing opportunities for exploration. To torch more calories take note that the lodge also provides tennis courts, pickleball, archery, a swimming pool, and lawn games. There is a special activity program for children ages 3 and up. Do you love animal sightings? Our family went on the Pinzgauer Tour (a large army truck), to view the elk. Think of it as a western version of an African safari.
- Art, Culture & Relaxation: The town of Bigfork has a vibrant arts community just minutes away. Families can visit galleries, attend summer theater performances, or stroll through the charming downtown. The lodge also offers spa services and yoga sessions for those seeking relaxation, which I readily booked.

Family-Friendly Dining
Meals at Flathead Lake Lodge start with hearty breakfasts. The Lodge organizes breakfast rides early in the morning in the mountains, and then provides riders with pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh baked breads and hot coffee. Lunch barbecues and gourmet dinners served in the main dining room or the patio. Entrees using locally soured ingredients are crafted to satisfy all tastes, including kid-friendly options.
Shared meals foster connection and conversation, making every dinner a special occasion. My favorite is the Steak Fry chuck wagon cookout. Families can ride horses or jump in the converted fire trucks and ride into the forest to indulge in fire pit grilled steaks and chicken, baked beans, fresh baked rolls, s’mores, and brownies. There is a good chance you will see a family of elk on the ridge above the campgrounds.

Creating Lasting Memories
The nightly campfires and storytelling sessions are traditions that capture the spirit of summer and bring generations closer together. Scheduled family tournaments, scavenger hunts, and group excursions ensure everyone is included and engaged.
At weeks’ end, don’t miss the rip-roaring Barn Dance. Families line dance and kick up their boots to a live country western band. We happened to be there during the annual BigFork Rodeo. Flathead Lake Lodge provided all their guests with VIP passes. My grand boys were enthralled with the bucking broncos, bull riding, barrel racers and trick horse riders.
